Matthew 5

And seeing the crowds, he went up on the mountain, and when he had sat down, his disciples came to him.

And opening his mouth, he taught them, saying,

Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of the heavens.

Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled.

Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.

Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God.

Blessed are those who have been persecuted on account of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of the heavens.

Blessed are you when they insult you and persecute you and say all kinds of evil against you, lying, on account of me.

Rejoice and exult, for your reward is great in the heavens; for thus they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

You yourselves are the salt of the earth; but if the salt becomes tasteless, with what will it be salted? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men.

You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.

Nor do they light a lamp and put it under the basket, but on the lampstand, and it shines for all those in the house.

Thus let your light shine before men, so that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in the heavens.

Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish but to fulfill.

For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not one iota or one stroke of a letter will pass away from the law, until all things come to pass.

Whoever therefore breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do so will be called least in the kingdom of the heavens; but whoever does and teaches them, this one will be called great in the kingdom of the heavens.

For I say to you that unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will certainly not enter into the kingdom of the heavens.

You have heard that it was said to the ancients, ‘You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to the judgment.’

But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother without cause will be liable to the judgment; and whoever says to his brother, Raca, will be liable to the Sanhedrin; and whoever says, Fool, will be liable to the Gehenna of fire.

If therefore you are offering your gift at the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you,

leave your gift there before the altar, and go; first be reconciled to your brother, and then, having come, offer your gift.

Make friends quickly with your accuser, while you are with him on the way, lest the accuser hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the officer, and you be thrown into prison.

Truly I say to you, you will certainly not come out from there until you have paid the last quadrans.

You have heard that it was said to the ancients, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’

But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman to lust after her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

But if your right eye causes you to stumble, pluck it out and throw it away from you; for it is better for you that one of your members perish than that your whole body be thrown into Gehenna.

And if your right hand causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away from you; for it is better for you that one of your members perish than that your whole body go into Gehenna.

It was also said, Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.

But I myself say to you that everyone who divorces his wife, except on the ground of sexual immorality, makes her commit adultery; and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.

Again, you have heard that it was said to the ancients, You shall not swear falsely, but you shall fulfill to the Lord your oaths.

But I say to you, do not swear at all; neither by heaven, because it is the throne of God,

nor by the earth, because it is the footstool of his feet, nor by Jerusalem, because it is the city of the great King,

Nor shall you swear by your head, because you are not able to make one hair white or black.

But let your word be Yes, yes; No, no; and whatever is beyond these comes from the evil one.

You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye and tooth for tooth.’

But I say to you, do not resist the evildoer; but whoever strikes you on your right cheek, turn to him the other also;

And to the one who wants to sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak also;

And whoever compels you to go one mile, go with him two.

Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wishes to borrow from you.

You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’

But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do well to those who hate you, and pray for those who mistreat you and persecute you,

so that you may be sons of your Father who is in the heavens, because he makes his sun rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.

For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same?

And if you greet only your brothers, what extraordinary thing are you doing? Do not even the Gentiles do the same?

Therefore you shall be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
