Matthew 27
Now when morning came, all the chief priests and the elders of the people took counsel against Jesus so as to put Him to death,
and having bound Him, they led Him away and handed Him over to Pontius Pilate the governor.
Then Judas, the one who had betrayed him, seeing that he was condemned, was seized with remorse and returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders,
saying, 'I sinned in betraying innocent blood.' But they said, 'What is that to us? You see to it.'
And having thrown the pieces of silver into the temple, he withdrew, and going away, he hanged himself.
But the chief priests, having taken the pieces of silver, said: It is not lawful to put them into the treasury, since it is the price of blood.
And having taken counsel, they bought with them the potter's field, as a burial place for strangers.
Therefore that field has been called Field of Blood to this day.
Then was fulfilled what was spoken through Jeremiah the prophet, saying: And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of the One who had been priced, on whom they had set a price, by the sons of Israel,
and they gave them for the potter's field, just as the Lord directed me.
Now Jesus stood before the governor; and the governor questioned him, saying, 'Are you the King of the Jews?' And Jesus said to him, 'You say so.'
And while he was being accused by the chief priests and elders, he answered nothing.
Then Pilate says to him: Do you not hear how many things they testify against you?
And he did not answer him, not even to a single word, so that the governor was greatly amazed.
Now at the feast the governor was accustomed to release to the crowd one prisoner, whom they wished.
And at that time they were holding a notorious prisoner called Jesus Barabbas.
Therefore, when they were assembled, Pilate said to them: Whom do you want me to release to you, Jesus Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?
For he knew that they had handed him over out of envy.
Now while he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent to him, saying: Have nothing to do with that righteous man, for I suffered many things today in a dream because of him.
But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowds to ask for Barabbas and to destroy Jesus.
But the governor answered and said to them: Which of the two do you want me to release to you? And they said: Barabbas.
Pilate says to them, 'What then shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?' They all say, 'Let him be crucified!'
But the governor said: Why, what evil has he done? But they kept crying out all the more, saying: Let him be crucified!
Now when Pilate saw that he was accomplishing nothing, but rather that a riot was breaking out, he took water and washed his hands before the crowd, saying, 'I am innocent of the blood of this righteous man; you see to it yourselves.'
And all the people answered and said: His blood be on us and on our children!
Then he released Barabbas to them, but Jesus, having flogged him, he delivered up to be crucified.
Then the soldiers of the governor, having taken Jesus into the Praetorium, gathered the whole cohort before him,
And having stripped him, they put a scarlet robe around him,
And having twisted together a crown of thorns, they put it on His head, and a reed in His right hand, and having knelt before Him, they mocked Him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews!
And having spit on him, they took the reed and kept striking him on his head.
And when they had mocked him, they stripped off the robe from him and put his own garments on him, and led him away to crucify him.
Now as they were going out, they found a man of Cyrene named Simon; this man they compelled to carry his cross.
And having come to a place called Golgotha, which is called Place of a Skull,
They gave Him wine to drink, mingled with gall; and having tasted it, He would not drink.
And sitting down, they kept guard over him there.
And they put up over His head the charge against Him, written: This is Jesus, the King of the Jews.
Then two robbers are crucified with him, one at the right and one at the left.
And those passing by were reviling Him, wagging their heads,
and saying: You who destroy the sanctuary and build it in three days, save yourself! If you are the Son of God, also come down from the cross!
And likewise also the chief priests, mocking with the scribes and elders and Pharisees, were saying:
He saved others; himself he cannot save. If he is King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe in him.
He has trusted in God; let Him deliver him now, if He wants him; for He said, I am the Son of God.
And in the same way even the robbers who had been crucified with Him were reviling Him.
Now from the sixth hour darkness came over all the land until the ninth hour.
And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying: Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani? that is, My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?
Now some of those standing there, when they heard it, were saying that this man is calling Elijah.
And immediately one of them ran and took a sponge, and filled it with sour wine, and put it on a reed, and gave it to Him to drink.
And Jesus, having cried out again with a loud voice, yielded up His spirit.
And behold, the veil of the sanctuary was torn in two from top to bottom, and the earth was shaken, and the rocks were split,
and the tombs were opened, and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised,
and coming out of the tombs after his resurrection, they entered into the holy city and appeared to many.
And the centurion and those with him keeping guard over Jesus, when they saw the earthquake and the things that were happening, were greatly afraid, saying: Truly this was the Son of God.
Now many women were there, looking on from afar, who had followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering to him,
among whom were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of the sons of Zebedee.
Now when evening had come, there came a rich man from Arimathea named Joseph, who himself also had become a disciple of Jesus.
This man, having gone to Pilate, asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded the body to be given over.
And taking the body, Joseph wrapped it in a clean linen cloth,
and laid it in his new tomb, which he had hewn in the rock, and having rolled a great stone to the door of the tomb, he went away.
Now Mary Magdalene was there, and the other Mary, sitting opposite the tomb.
Now on the next day, which is after the Preparation, the chief priests and the Pharisees were gathered together before Pilate,
saying: Sir, we remember that that deceiver, while still living, said: After three days I am raised.
Therefore command the tomb to be made secure until the third day, lest his disciples come by night and steal him away and say to the people: He has been raised from the dead. And the last deception will be worse than the first.
Pilate said to them: You have a guard; go, make it as secure as you know how.
So they went and made the tomb secure, sealing the stone, together with the guard.
