Matthew 22

And Jesus answering spoke to them again in parables, saying:

The kingdom of the heavens has become like a man, a king, who made a wedding feast for his son.

And he sent his servants to call those who had been invited to the wedding feast, and they were not willing to come.

Again he sent other slaves, saying, 'Say to those invited: Behold, I have prepared my feast; my oxen and fatlings have been killed, and everything is ready; come to the wedding feast.'

But they paid no attention and went away, one to his own field, and another to his business;

And the rest, seizing his slaves, mistreated and killed them.

Now that king was angry, and having sent his armies he destroyed those murderers and burned their city.

Then he says to his slaves, 'The wedding feast indeed is ready, but those invited were not worthy.'

Go therefore to the main road junctions, and as many as you find, invite to the wedding feast.

And those slaves, going out into the highways, gathered together all whom they found, both bad and good; and the wedding hall was filled with those reclining at table.

But when the king entered to look at those reclining at table, he saw there a man not clothed in a wedding garment.

And he says to him, 'Friend, how did you enter here not having a wedding garment?' But he was silenced.

Then the king said to the attendants, 'Bind his feet and hands and take him and cast him out into the outer darkness; there will be the weeping and the gnashing of teeth.'

For many are called, but few are chosen.

Then the Pharisees went and took counsel how they might trap him in his words.

And they send to Him their disciples with the Herodians, saying, 'Teacher, we know that You are true and teach the way of God in truth, and it is of no concern to You about anyone, for You do not look on the appearance of men.'

Tell us therefore, what do You think? Is it lawful to give tribute to Caesar, or not?

But Jesus, knowing their malice, said: Why do you test me, hypocrites?

Show me the coin of the tribute. So they brought to Him a denarius.

And He says to them, 'Whose image is this, and whose inscription?'

They say to Him, 'Caesar's.' Then He says to them, 'Render therefore the things of Caesar to Caesar, and the things of God to God.'

And having heard this, they marveled, and leaving him they went away.

On that day Sadducees came to Him, who say there is no resurrection, and they questioned Him,

saying: Teacher, Moses said: If anyone should die not having children, his brother shall marry his wife and raise up offspring for his brother.

Now there were among us seven brothers; and the first, having married, died, and having no offspring, he left his wife to his brother.

Likewise also the second, and the third, down to the seventh.

And last of all the woman also died.

In the resurrection therefore, of which of the seven will she be the wife? For they all had her.

But Jesus answering said to them: You are deceived, not knowing the Scriptures nor the power of God.

For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels of God in heaven.

But concerning the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was spoken to you by God, saying:

'I am the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob'? He is not the God of the dead but of the living.

And when the crowds heard it, they were astonished at his teaching.

But the Pharisees, having heard that He had silenced the Sadducees, were gathered together.

And one of them, an expert in the law, questioned Him, testing Him, and saying:

Teacher, which commandment is greatest in the law?

And He said to him, 'You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.'

This is the great and first commandment.

And the second is like it: 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.'

On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus questioned them,

saying: What do you think concerning the Christ? Whose son is he? They say to him: David's.

He says to them, 'How then does David in the Spirit call Him Lord, saying:'

The Lord said to my Lord: Sit at my right hand, until I put your enemies under your feet?

If therefore David calls him Lord, how is he his son?

And no one was able to answer him a word, nor did anyone dare from that day to question him any longer.
