Matthew 20
For the kingdom of the heavens is like a man, a master of a house, who went out early in the morning to hire workers for his vineyard.
And having agreed with the workers for a denarius a day, he sent them into his vineyard.
And going out about the third hour, he saw others standing idle in the marketplace,
And to those he said, 'You also go into the vineyard, and whatever is right I will give you.'
Again, going out about the sixth and ninth hour, he did likewise.
And about the eleventh hour he went out and found others standing idle, and he says to them, 'Why do you stand here idle the whole day?'
They say to him, Because no one has hired us. He says to them, Go, you also, into the vineyard, and whatever is right you will receive.
And when evening had come, the master of the vineyard says to his foreman, 'Call the workers and pay them their wages, beginning from the last to the first.'
And when those hired about the eleventh hour came, they each received a denarius.
But when the first came, they supposed that they would receive more; and they too received a denarius each.
And when they received it, they began to grumble against the master of the house,
saying, 'These last worked a single hour, and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the day and the scorching heat.'
But he answered one of them and said, Friend, I am not doing you wrong; did you not agree with me for a denarius?
Take what is yours and go. But I wish to give to this last man as also to you.
Or is it not lawful for me to do what I want with what is mine? Or is your eye envious because I am good?
So the last shall be first, and the first last; for many are called, but few chosen.
And as Jesus was about to go up to Jerusalem, he took the twelve disciples aside privately, and on the way he said to them,
Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be handed over to the chief priests and scribes, and they will condemn him to death,
and they will hand him over to the Gentiles to mock and to flog and to crucify, and on the third day he will be raised.
Then the mother of the sons of Zebedee came to him with her sons, kneeling down and asking something from him.
And he said to her, 'What do you want?' She says to him, 'Say that these my two sons may sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your kingdom.'
But Jesus answered and said, 'You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I am about to drink, and to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?' They say to him, 'We are able.'
And he says to them, 'My cup indeed you will drink, and with the baptism with which I am baptized you will be baptized; but to sit at my right hand and at my left is not mine to give, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father.'
And when the ten heard this, they were indignant about the two brothers.
But Jesus called them to him and said, 'You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them.'
It shall not be so among you; but whoever wishes to become great among you shall be your servant,
and whoever wishes to be first among you shall be your slave;
even as the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.
And as they were going out from Jericho, a great crowd followed him.
And behold, two blind men sitting beside the road, when they heard that Jesus was passing by, cried out, saying, 'Have mercy on us, Lord, Jesus, Son of David!'
And the crowd rebuked them, that they should be silent; but they cried out all the more, saying, 'Have mercy on us, Lord, Son of David!'
And Jesus, having stopped, called them and said, 'What do you wish that I should do for you?'
They say to him, 'Lord, that our eyes may be opened.'
And Jesus, moved with compassion, touched their eyes, and immediately their eyes received sight, and they followed him.
