Matthew 16
And the Pharisees and Sadducees, having approached and testing him, asked him to show them a sign from heaven.
But he answered and said to them, 'When evening has come, you say, Fair weather, for the sky is red;
and in the morning, 'Today there will be a storm, for the sky is red and overcast.' Hypocrites! You know how to discern the appearance of the sky, but the signs of the times you are not able to discern?
An evil and adulterous generation seeks a sign, and no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah the prophet. And leaving them, he went away.
And when his disciples came to the other side, they had forgotten to take bread.
And Jesus said to them, 'Watch out and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.'
And they were reasoning among themselves, saying, 'It is because we took no bread.'
But Jesus, knowing this, said to them, 'Why are you reasoning among yourselves, O you of little faith, that you have no bread?'
Do you not yet understand, nor remember the five loaves of the five thousand, and how many baskets you took up?
Nor the seven loaves of the four thousand, and how many baskets you took up?
How is it that you do not understand that I was not speaking to you about bread? But beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.
Then they understood that he had not said to beware of the leaven of bread, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.
Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he was asking his disciples, saying, Who do people say that I, the Son of Man, am?
And they said, 'Some say John the Baptist, but others Elijah, and still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.'
He says to them, But you, who do you say that I am?
And Simon Peter answered and said, 'You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.'
And Jesus answered and said to him, Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but my Father who is in the heavens.
And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it.
And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of the heavens, and whatever you bind on earth will have been bound in the heavens, and whatever you loose on earth will have been loosed in the heavens.
Then he ordered his disciples that they should tell no one that he was the Christ.
From that time Jesus Christ began to show his disciples that it was necessary for him to go to Jerusalem and to suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and to be killed, and on the third day to be raised.
And Peter, taking him aside, began to rebuke him, saying, God forbid it, Lord! This shall never happen to you.
But he, having turned, said to Peter, Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me, for you are not minding the things of God but the things of men.
Then Jesus said to his disciples, If anyone desires to come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.
For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it; but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.
For what will it profit a person if he gains the whole world but forfeits his soul? Or what will a person give in exchange for his soul?
For the Son of Man is about to come in the glory of his Father with his angels, and then he will repay to each one according to his conduct.
Truly I say to you, there are some of those standing here who will certainly not taste death until they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.
