Matthew 10

¹And having summoned his twelve disciples, he gave them authority over unclean spirits, so as to cast them out and to heal every disease and every sickness.

²Now the names of the twelve apostles are these: first Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother, and James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother,

⁴Simon the Zealot and Judas Iscariot, the very one who betrayed him.

⁵These twelve Jesus sent forth, having instructed them, saying, Do not go off into the way of the Gentiles, and do not enter into any city of the Samaritans;

⁶but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.

⁷And as you go, proclaim, saying that the kingdom of the heavens has drawn near.

⁸Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, cast out demons. Freely you received, freely give.

⁹Do not acquire gold, nor silver, nor copper for your belts,

¹⁰nor a bag for the journey, nor two tunics, nor sandals, nor a staff; for the worker is worthy of his food.

¹¹And whatever city or village you enter, inquire who in it is worthy, and there remain until you go forth.

¹²And as you enter the house, greet it.

¹³And if indeed the house is worthy, let your peace come upon it; but if it is not worthy, let your peace return to you.

¹⁴And whoever will not receive you, nor hear your words, as you go forth out of that house or city, shake off the dust of your feet.

¹⁵Truly I say to you, it will be more bearable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah in the day of judgment than for that city.

¹⁶Behold, I myself send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves; be therefore shrewd as the serpents and innocent as the doves.

¹⁷But beware of men; for they will hand you over to councils, and in their synagogues they will flog you;

¹⁸and you will be brought before governors and kings on account of me, as a testimony to them and to the Gentiles.

¹⁹But when they deliver you up, do not be anxious how or what you are to speak; for it will be given to you in that hour what you are to speak.

²⁰For it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father who speaks in you.

²¹And brother will hand over brother to death, and a father his child; and children will rise up against parents and put them to death.

²²And you will be hated by all on account of my name; but the one who has endured to the end, he will be saved.

²⁴A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a slave above his master.

²⁵It is enough for the disciple that he become like his teacher, and the slave like his master. If they called the master of the house Beelzebul, how much more the members of his household!

²⁶Therefore do not fear them; for nothing is concealed that will not be revealed, and hidden that will not be made known.

²⁷What I tell you in the darkness, speak in the light; and what you hear whispered in your ear, proclaim upon the housetops.

²⁸And do not be afraid of those who kill the body but are not able to kill the soul; but rather be afraid of the One who is able to destroy both soul and body in Gehenna.

²⁹Are not two sparrows sold for an assarion? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father.

³⁰But even the hairs of your head are all numbered.

³¹Therefore do not fear; you are worth more than many sparrows.

³²Therefore everyone who confesses me before men, I also will confess him before my Father who is in the heavens.

³³But whoever denies me before men, I myself also will deny him before my Father who is in the heavens.

³⁴Do not think that I came to bring peace upon the earth; I did not come to bring peace, but a sword.

³⁵For I came to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law;

³⁶And a man's enemies will be the members of his own household.

³⁷The one who loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; and the one who loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me;

³⁸And whoever does not take his cross and follow after me is not worthy of me.

³⁹The one who finds his life will lose it, and the one who loses his life on account of me will find it.

⁴⁰The one who receives you receives me, and the one who receives me receives the One who sent me.

⁴¹The one who receives a prophet in the name of a prophet will receive a prophet's reward, and the one who receives a righteous man in the name of a righteous man will receive a righteous man's reward.

⁴²And whoever gives to one of these little ones only a cup of cold water to drink in the name of a disciple, amen I say to you, he will certainly not lose his reward.
