Matthew 1

¹The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, son of David, son of Abraham.

²Abraham begot Isaac; and Isaac begot Jacob; and Jacob begot Judah and his brothers;

³And Judah begot Perez and Zerah by Tamar; and Perez begot Hezron; and Hezron begot Aram;

⁴And Aram begot Amminadab; and Amminadab begot Nahshon; and Nahshon begot Salmon;

⁵And Salmon begot Boaz by Rahab; and Boaz begot Obed by Ruth; and Obed begot Jesse;

⁶And Jesse begot David the king; and David the king begot Solomon by the wife of Uriah;

⁷And Solomon begot Rehoboam; and Rehoboam begot Abijah; and Abijah begot Asa;

⁸And Asa begot Jehoshaphat; and Jehoshaphat begot Joram; and Joram begot Uzziah;

⁹And Uzziah begot Jotham; and Jotham begot Ahaz; and Ahaz begot Hezekiah;

¹⁰And Hezekiah begot Manasseh; and Manasseh begot Amon; and Amon begot Josiah;

¹¹And Josiah begot Jeconiah and his brothers, at the deportation to Babylon.

¹²And after the deportation to Babylon, Jeconiah begot Shealtiel; and Shealtiel begot Zerubbabel;

¹³And Zerubbabel begot Abiud; and Abiud begot Eliakim; and Eliakim begot Azor;

¹⁴And Azor begot Zadok; and Zadok begot Achim; and Achim begot Eliud;

¹⁵And Eliud begot Eleazar; and Eleazar begot Matthan; and Matthan begot Jacob;

¹⁶And Jacob begot Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.

¹⁷So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; and from David to the deportation to Babylon, fourteen generations; and from the deportation to Babylon to the Christ, fourteen generations.

¹⁸Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found to be with child by the Holy Spirit.

¹⁹And Joseph her husband, being righteous and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly.

²⁰But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, ‘Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.

²¹She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.’

²²Now all this took place to fulfill what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying:

²³‘Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel’ (which, translated, means, ‘God with us’).

²⁴When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him, and took his wife,

²⁵but he knew her not until she had borne her firstborn son, and he called his name Jesus.
