Mark 6

And he went out from there and comes into his hometown, and his disciples follow him.

And when the Sabbath came, he began to teach in the synagogue; and the many who were hearing were astonished, saying, 'From where does this man have these things? And what is the wisdom given to this man, so that even such mighty works are being done through his hands?'

Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? And are not his sisters here with us? And they were offended by him.

And Jesus said to them, A prophet is not without honor except in his hometown and among his relatives and in his own household.

And he was not able to do any miracle there, except that he healed a few sick people, having laid his hands on them.

And he was marveling because of their unbelief. And he was going around the villages teaching.

And he summoned the Twelve and began to send them out two by two, and was giving them authority over the unclean spirits.

And he instructed them to take nothing for the journey except a staff only -- no bread, no bag, no money in the belt,

but wearing sandals, and do not put on two tunics.

And he was saying to them, Wherever you enter a house, stay there until you depart from that place.

And whatever place does not receive you and they do not hear you, departing from there shake off the dust that is under your feet for a testimony against them. [[Truly I say to you, it will be more tolerable for Sodom or Gomorrah in the day of judgment than for that city.]]

And having gone out, they proclaimed that people should repent,

And they were casting out many demons and were anointing many sick people with oil and were healing them.

And King Herod heard, for his name had become known, and they were saying that John the Baptizer has been raised from the dead, and because of this the miraculous powers are at work in him.

But others were saying that he is Elijah, and others were saying that he is a prophet, or like one of the prophets.

But Herod, having heard, was saying: 'John, whom I beheaded -- he himself has been raised from the dead!'

For Herod himself had sent and seized John and bound him in prison, on account of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip, because he had married her.

For John had been saying to Herod, 'It is not lawful for you to have your brother's wife.'

Now Herodias had a grudge against him and wanted to kill him, but was not able;

For Herod was afraid of John, knowing him to be a righteous and holy man, and was keeping him safe. And when he heard him he was much perplexed, and was gladly hearing him.

And when an opportune day came, Herod on his birthday gave a banquet for his nobles and the military commanders and the leading men of Galilee.

And when the daughter of Herodias herself came in and danced, she pleased Herod and those reclining with him, and the king said to the girl, 'Ask me for whatever you wish, and I will give it to you.'

And he swore to her earnestly: 'Whatever you ask me I will give you, up to half of my kingdom.'

And she went out and said to her mother, What should I ask for? And she said, The head of John the Baptizer.

And having entered immediately with haste to the king, she asked, saying, 'I desire that you give me at once the head of John the Baptist on a platter.'

And the king, having become deeply grieved because of his oaths and those reclining with him, was not willing to refuse her.

And immediately the king, having sent a soldier of the guard, commanded him to bring his head. And he went and beheaded him in the prison

and brought his head on a platter and gave it to the girl, and the girl gave it to her mother.

And when his disciples heard of it, they came and took up his body and laid it in a tomb.

And the apostles gathered to Jesus, and they related to him all things, both what they had done and what they had taught.

And he says to them: 'Come, you yourselves privately to a desolate place and rest a little.' For those coming and those going were many, and they did not even have leisure to eat.

And they departed in the boat to a desolate place by themselves.

And the crowds saw them going, and many recognized him, and on foot from all the towns they ran there together and arrived there before them.

And having gone out he saw a great crowd, and he was moved with compassion toward them, because they were like sheep not having a shepherd. And he began to teach them many things.

And when the hour was already late, his disciples came to him and were saying that the place is desolate and already the hour is late.

Dismiss them, so that having gone to the surrounding countryside and villages, they may buy themselves something to eat; for they do not have anything.

But answering he said to them, 'You yourselves give them something to eat.' And they say to him, 'Having gone, shall we buy two hundred denarii of bread and give it to them to eat?'

He said to them, 'How many loaves do you have? Go and see.' And finding out, they say, 'Five, and two fish.'

And he commanded them to have all recline in groups upon the green grass.

And they reclined in garden-plot groups, by hundreds and by fifties.

And taking the five loaves and the two fish, having looked up to heaven, he blessed and broke the loaves and was giving them to the disciples, that they might set them before the crowd, and the two fish he divided among all.

And all ate and were satisfied,

And they took up twelve hand-baskets full of fragments, and [some] of the fish.

And those who ate the loaves were about five thousand men.

And immediately he compelled his disciples to embark into the boat and to go ahead to the other side to Bethsaida, while he himself dismisses the crowd.

And having taken leave of them, he departed into the mountain to pray.

And when evening came, the boat was in the midst of the sea, and he himself was alone on the land.

And seeing them straining in the rowing -- for the wind was contrary to them -- about the fourth watch of the night he comes to them walking on the sea, and he was wishing to pass them by.

But they, having seen him walking on the sea, thought that it is a ghost, and cried out;

For all saw him and were troubled. But immediately he spoke with them and says to them, 'Take courage! I am he; do not fear.'

And he went up to them into the boat, and the wind ceased. And they were exceedingly beyond measure amazed within themselves and marveled;

for they had not understood concerning the loaves, but their heart was hardened.

And having crossed over to the land they came to Gennesaret and drew to shore.

And when they got out of the boat, immediately they recognized him.

they ran through that whole region and began to carry on mats those who were sick to wherever they were hearing that he is.

And wherever he was entering into villages or into cities or into fields, in the marketplaces they were laying down the sick, and were begging him that they might touch even the fringe of his clothing, and as many as touched him were being healed.
