Mark 1

The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

Even as it has been written in Isaiah the prophet: Behold, I send my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way before you.

A voice of one crying in the wilderness: 'Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.'

John came baptizing in the wilderness and proclaiming a baptism of repentance for forgiveness of sins.

And all the region of Judea and all the people of Jerusalem were going out to him, and they were being baptized by him in the Jordan River, confessing their sins.

Now John was clothed in camel's hair and a leather belt around his waist, and he was eating locusts and wild honey.

And he was preaching, saying: 'After me comes one mightier than I, of whom I am not worthy to stoop down and untie the strap of his sandals.'

I indeed baptized you in water, but he himself will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.

And it came to pass in those days that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized in the Jordan by John.

And immediately, coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit descending upon him like a dove;

And a voice came out of the heavens: 'You are my beloved Son; in you I am well pleased.'

And immediately the Spirit drives him out into the wilderness.

And he was there in the wilderness forty days, being tempted by Satan; and he was with the wild animals, and the angels were ministering to him.

Now after John was delivered up, Jesus came into Galilee, proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom of God.

and saying that the time has been fulfilled and the kingdom of God has drawn near; repent and believe in the gospel.

And passing along beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew the brother of Simon, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen.

And Jesus said to them, Come, follow after me, and I will make you become fishers of people.

And immediately, leaving their nets, they followed him.

And going on a little from there, he saw James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, and they were in the boat mending the nets,

And immediately he called them; and leaving their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants, they went away after him.

And they go into Capernaum; and immediately on the Sabbath, having entered into the synagogue, he was teaching.

And they were astonished at his teaching, for he was teaching them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.

And immediately there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit, and he cried out,

saying, What have we to do with you, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are, the Holy One of God!

And Jesus rebuked him, saying: 'Be silent, and come out of him!'

And the unclean spirit, throwing him into convulsions and crying out with a loud voice, came out of him.

And they were all amazed, so that they questioned among themselves, saying: 'What is this? What is this new teaching? For with authority he commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him!'

And the report of him went out immediately everywhere into the whole surrounding region of Galilee.

And immediately, having gone out of the synagogue, they came into the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John.

Now Simon's mother-in-law was lying down with a fever, and immediately they tell him about her.

And coming to her, he raised her up, taking hold of her hand; and immediately the fever left her, and she began to minister to them.

Now when evening had come, when the sun had set, they were bringing to him all those who were sick and those who were demon-possessed;

And the whole city was gathered together at the door.

And he healed many who were sick with various diseases, and he cast out many demons, and he would not permit the demons to speak, because they knew him to be Christ.

And very early, while it was still night, having risen he went out and departed into a deserted place, and there he was praying.

And Simon and those with him searched for him,

and they found him and they say to him, 'Everyone is seeking you.'

And he says to them, Let us go elsewhere, into the neighboring towns, so that I may preach there also; for this is why I came out.

And he went throughout all Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and casting out the demons.

And there comes to him a leper, imploring him and kneeling down before him, saying to him, 'If you are willing, you are able to cleanse me.'

And Jesus, moved with compassion, stretched out his hand and touched him, and says to him, I am willing; be cleansed.

And when he had spoken, immediately the leprosy departed from him, and he was cleansed.

And sternly warning him, he immediately sent him away,

And he says to him, 'See that you say nothing to anyone, but go, show yourself to the priest and offer for your cleansing what Moses commanded, as a testimony to them.'

But he, going out, began to proclaim it freely and to spread the news abroad, so that Jesus could no longer enter a town openly, but was outside in solitary places; and they kept coming to him from every direction.
