Luke 8

And it came about afterward that he himself was traveling through city and village, proclaiming and bringing good news of the kingdom of God, and the Twelve with him.

and certain women who had been healed from evil spirits and infirmities — Mary called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out,

and Joanna, wife of Chuza, Herod's steward, and Susanna, and many others, who were ministering to them out of their possessions.

And when a great crowd was gathering and those from city after city were coming to him, he spoke by means of a parable:

The sower went out to sow his seed; and as he sowed, some fell beside the road and was trampled underfoot, and the birds of the sky devoured it.

And another fell upon the rock, and having sprung up it withered, because of not having moisture.

And another fell in the midst of the thorns, and the thorns having sprung up together with it choked it.

And another fell into the good soil, and having sprung up it produced fruit a hundredfold. Saying these things he cried out: The one who has ears to hear, let him hear.

And his disciples were asking him, saying: What might this parable mean?

And he said: To you it has been given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God, but to the rest it is in parables, so that seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not understand.

Now this is the parable: the seed is the word of God.

Those beside the road are those who heard; then the devil comes and takes away the word from their heart, so that they may not believe and be saved.

Those on the rock are those who, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root — who believe for a time and in a time of testing fall away.

And that which fell into the thorns — these are those who heard, and as they go their way they are choked under anxious cares and wealth and pleasures of life, and bring no fruit to maturity.

And that in the good soil — these are those who, having heard the word, hold it fast in a noble and good heart, and bear fruit in steadfast endurance.

No one, having lit a lamp, covers it with a vessel or puts it under a bed, but puts it on a lampstand, so that those entering may see the light.

For nothing is hidden that will not become manifest, nor is anything secret that will certainly not be known and come to light.

Take heed therefore how you hear; for whoever has, to him will be given, and whoever does not have, even what he thinks he has will be taken from him.

And his mother and brothers came to him, but they were not able to reach him because of the crowd.

And it was reported to him, with people saying: Your mother and your brothers are standing outside, wishing to see you.

But answering, he said to them: My mother and my brothers — these are those who hear the word of God and do it.

Now it came about on one of those days that he himself got into a boat, he and his disciples, and he said to them: Let us cross over to the other side of the lake. And they put out to sea.

And as they were sailing, he fell asleep. And a hurricane of wind came down on the lake, and they were being swamped and were in danger.

And they came and woke him, saying: Master, Master, we are perishing! And he, having been fully awakened, rebuked the wind and the raging of the water; and they ceased, and there was a calm.

And he said to them: Where is your faith? And being afraid, they marveled, saying to one another: Who then is this, that he commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him?

And they sailed down to the region of the Gerasenes, which is opposite Galilee.

And when he stepped out on land, there met him a certain man from the city who had demons, and for a long time he had worn no clothing and was not staying in a house but in the tombs.

And seeing Jesus, he cried out and fell down before him and said with a loud voice: What have I to do with you, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you, do not torment me.

For he had been commanding the unclean spirit to come out from the man — for many times it had seized him, and he was bound with chains and fetters, being kept under guard — but breaking the bonds he was driven by the demon into the deserted places.

And Jesus asked him, saying: What is your name? And he said: Legion — because many demons had entered into him.

And they were begging him that he would not command them to go away into the Abyss.

Now there was there a considerable herd of pigs feeding on the hillside, and they begged him that he would permit them to enter into those. And he permitted them.

So the demons came out from the man and entered into the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and was drowned.

And when those who were herding them saw what had happened, they fled and reported it in the city and in the countryside.

So they went out to see what had happened, and they came to Jesus and found the man from whom the demons had gone out sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in his right mind. And they were afraid.

And those who had seen it also reported to them how the demonized man had been healed.

Then all the multitude of the surrounding region of the Gerasenes asked him to depart from them, because they were seized with great fear. And he himself, having gotten into the boat, returned.

But the man from whom the demons had gone out was begging him to be with him. But Jesus sent him away, saying:

Return to your house and recount all that God has done for you. And he departed, proclaiming throughout the whole city all that Jesus had done for him.

Now as Jesus was returning, the crowd welcomed him, for they were all waiting for him.

And behold, there came a man whose name was Jairus, and this man was a ruler of the synagogue. He fell at the feet of Jesus and was begging him to come to his house,

because he had an only daughter, about twelve years old, and she was dying. And as he was going, the crowds were pressing in on him.

Now there was a woman who had had a flow of blood for twelve years, [who had spent all her livelihood on physicians] and could not be healed by anyone,

She came up from behind and touched the fringe of his outer garment, and immediately her flow of blood stopped.

And Jesus said: Who is it who touched me? When everyone denied it, Peter said: Master, the crowds are pressing in on you and crushing you — and you say, 'Who touched me?'

But Jesus said: Someone touched me; for I myself perceived power going out from me.

And the woman, seeing that she had not escaped notice, came trembling and fell down before him; and before all the people she declared the reason why she had touched him and how she was healed immediately.

And he said to her: Daughter, your faith has saved you; go into peace.

While he was still speaking, someone comes from the house of the synagogue-ruler, saying to him, 'Your daughter has died; no longer trouble the Teacher.'

But Jesus, having heard, answered him, saying: 'Do not fear; only believe, and she will be healed.'

And when he arrived at the house, he did not allow anyone to enter with him except Peter and John and James, and the father of the child and the mother.

Now they were all weeping and beating their breasts for her. But he said: 'Do not weep; for she has not died, but is sleeping.'

And they began to laugh at him, because they knew that she had died.

But he himself, having put everyone outside and taken hold of her hand, called out, saying: 'Child, arise.'

And her spirit returned, and she arose immediately, and he directed that something be given her to eat.

And her parents were amazed; but he instructed them to tell no one what had happened.
