Luke 6

Now it came to pass on a Sabbath that he was passing through the grainfields, and his disciples were plucking the heads of grain and eating them, rubbing them in their hands.

But some of the Pharisees said to them: Why do you do what is not lawful on the Sabbaths?

And Jesus answering said to them: Have you not even read this, what David did when he was hungry, he himself and those who were with him?

how he entered into the house of God and took the loaves of presentation and ate and gave also to those with him, which it is not lawful to eat except for the priests alone?

And he was saying to them that: Lord of the Sabbath is the Son of Man.

Now it came to pass also on another Sabbath that he entered into the synagogue and was teaching; and a man was there, and his right hand was withered.

Now the scribes and the Pharisees were closely watching him to see whether he would heal on the Sabbath, so that they might find reason to accuse him.

But he himself knew their reasonings, and he said to the man who had the withered hand: Arise and stand in the midst. And having arisen, he stood.

Then Jesus said to them: I ask you whether it is lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do evil, to save a life or to destroy it?

And having looked around at all of them, he said to him: Stretch out your hand. And he did so; and his hand was restored sound as the other.

But they themselves were filled with mindless fury, and were discussing with one another what they might do to Jesus.

Now it came to pass in those days that he went out to the mountain to pray, and he was spending the whole night in prayer to God.

And when it became day, he called his disciples and having chosen from them twelve, whom he also named apostles:

Simon, whom he also named Peter, and Andrew his brother, and James and John and Philip and Bartholomew

and Matthew and Thomas and James the son of Alphaeus and Simon the one being called Zealot

and Judas son of James and Judas Iscariot, who also became a betrayer.

And having descended with them, he stood on a level place, and a large crowd of his disciples and a great multitude of the people from all Judea and Jerusalem and the coastal region of Tyre and Sidon

who had come to hear him and to be healed of their diseases; and those who were troubled by unclean spirits were being healed.

And the whole crowd was seeking to touch him, because power was going out from him and was healing all.

And he himself, lifting up his eyes upon his disciples, was saying: Blessed are the poor, for yours is the kingdom of God.

Blessed are those who hunger now, for you will be filled. Blessed are those who weep now, for you will laugh.

Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude you and insult you and cast out your name as evil on account of the Son of Man.

Rejoice in that day and leap for joy; for behold, your reward is great in heaven; for in the same way their ancestors were treating the prophets.

But woe to you who are rich, for you are receiving in full your comfort.

Woe to you who are filled now, for you will hunger. Woe to you who are laughing now, for you will mourn and weep.

Woe to you when all people speak well of you; for in the same way their ancestors were treating the false prophets.

But I say to you who are hearing: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,

bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.

To the one who strikes you on the cheek, offer also the other; and from the one who takes away your cloak, do not withhold your tunic either.

To everyone who asks you, give; and from the one who takes away what is yours, do not ask back.

And just as you desire that people would do to you, you yourselves do likewise to them.

And if you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them.

For even if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same.

And if you lend to those from whom you expect to receive, what credit is that to you? For even sinners lend to sinners so that they may receive back the same amount.

But love your enemies and do good and lend, expecting nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, for he himself is kind to the ungrateful and the evil.

Be merciful, therefore, just as your Father also is merciful.

And do not judge, and you will certainly not be judged. And do not condemn, and you will certainly not be condemned. Release, and you will be released.

Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down and shaken together and running over, they will put into your lap; for with the measure you measure it will be measured back to you.

He also spoke a parable to them: Can a blind man lead a blind man? Will they not both fall into a pit?

A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone who is fully trained will be like his teacher.

Why do you see the speck that is in your brother's eye, but the beam that is in your own eye you do not notice?

Or how can you say to your brother, 'Brother, let me take out the speck that is in your eye,' when you yourself do not see the beam that is in your own eye? Hypocrite, first take out the beam from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take out the speck that is in your brother's eye.

For there is no good tree that produces bad fruit, nor again a bad tree that produces good fruit.

For each tree is known by its own fruit. For figs are not gathered from thorns, nor are grapes picked from a bramble bush.

The good man brings forth good out of the good treasury of his heart, and the evil man brings forth evil out of his evil treasury; for out of the overflow of the heart his mouth speaks.

Why do you call me, 'Lord, Lord,' and do not do what I say?

Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you whom he is like.

He is like a man building a house, who dug and went deep and laid a foundation upon the rock. When a flood arose, the river burst against that house, but it was not able to shake it, because it had been well built.

But the one who heard and did not do is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the river burst against it, it collapsed at once, and the ruin of that house was great.
