Leviticus 11
And the LORD spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying to them,
Speak to the sons of Israel, saying: These are the living creatures that you may eat from among all the animals that are upon the earth.
Every animal that has a divided hoof — split into two hooves — and chews the cud among the animals, that you may eat.
However, these you shall not eat from those that chew the cud and from those that have a divided hoof: the camel, for it chews the cud but its hoof is not divided — it is unclean to you.
And the rock badger, for it chews the cud but its hoof it does not divide — it is unclean to you.
And the hare, for it chews the cud but its hoof it has not divided — it is unclean to you.
And the pig, for it has a divided hoof — split into two hooves — but cud it does not chew — it is unclean to you.
Of their flesh you shall not eat, and their carcass you shall not touch; they are unclean of you all.
This you may eat from all that is in the waters: everything that has fin and scale in the waters, in the seas and in the streams — these you may eat.
But all that have no fins and scales, in the seas and in the streams, from all the swarming things of the water and from every living creature that is in the water — they are a detestable thing to you.
They shall be a detestable thing to you — you shall not eat of their flesh, and their carcasses you shall detest.
Everything that has no fins and scales in the water — it is a detestable thing to you.
And these you shall detest from among the flying things — they shall not be eaten, they are a detestable thing: the eagle, the bearded vulture, and the black vulture,
and the red kite, and the falcon according to its kind,
every raven after its kind,
and the daughter of the wasteland, and the tachmas, and the gull, and the hawk after its kind,
and the little owl, and the cormorant, and the great owl,
and the white owl, and the pelican, and the carrion vulture,
and the stork, and the heron according to its kind, and the hoopoe, and the bat.
Every swarming flying thing that goes on four legs — it is a detestable thing to you.
However, these you may eat from every swarming flying thing that goes on four legs — those that have jointed legs above their feet for leaping on the ground.
These you may eat from them: the locust according to its kind, and the bald locust according to its kind, and the cricket according to its kind, and the grasshopper according to its kind.
But all the swarming things of the flying things that have four legs — it is a detestable thing of you all.
And by these you shall make yourselves unclean: whoever touches their carcass shall be unclean until the evening.
And whoever carries any of their carcass shall wash his garments and be unclean until the evening.
For all animals that divide a hoof but it is not completely cleft, and do not bring up cud — they are unclean to you all; all who touch them shall be unclean.
And all that walk on their paws among all the living creatures that walk on four — they are unclean to you all; all who touch their carcass shall be unclean until the evening.
And the one who carries their carcass shall wash his garments and be unclean until the evening — they are unclean of you all.
And this to you all is the unclean among the swarming things that swarm upon the earth: the weasel, and the mouse, and the great lizard according to its kind.
and the gecko, and the monitor lizard, and the lizard, and the sand lizard, and the chameleon.
These are the unclean ones for you all among all the swarming things — everyone touching them when they die shall be unclean until the evening.
And anything upon which any of them falls when they die shall be unclean, whether any article of wood, or garment, or skin, or sackcloth — any article by which work is done; it shall be brought into water and be unclean until the evening, and then it shall be clean.
And every earthenware vessel into which any of them falls — everything that is inside it shall be unclean, and it you shall break.
Any food that may be eaten, upon which water comes, shall be unclean; and any drink that may be drunk in any vessel shall be unclean.
And all upon which any of their carcass falls shall be unclean; an oven and a cooking range shall be demolished — they are unclean, and they shall be unclean to you all.
However, a spring and a cistern — a collection of water — shall be clean, and one who touches their carcass shall be unclean.
And if any of their carcass falls upon any seed for sowing that is to be sown, it is clean.
But if water is put upon seed and any of their carcass falls upon it, it is unclean to you all.
And if any animal that is food for you dies, whoever touches its carcass shall be unclean until the evening.
And whoever eats of its carcass shall wash his garments and be unclean until the evening, and whoever carries its carcass shall wash his garments and be unclean until the evening.
And every swarming thing that swarms upon the ground — it is a detestable thing, it shall not be eaten.
Everything that goes on its belly, and everything that goes on four legs, up to everything that has many legs — among all the swarming things that swarm upon the ground — you shall not eat them, for they are a detestable thing.
Do not make yourselves detestable with any swarming thing that swarms, and do not defile yourselves with them, so that you become unclean by them.
For I am the LORD your God, and you shall consecrate yourselves and be holy, for I am holy; and you shall not defile your souls in all the swarming things that creep upon the earth.
For I am the LORD, who brought you up from the land of Egypt to be God of you all; and you shall be holy, for I am holy.
This is the instruction for the beast and the flying things and every living creature that creeps in the waters and every living creature that swarms upon the land.
to distinguish between the unclean and the clean, and between the living creature that may be eaten and the living creature that may not be eaten.
