John 8

Therefore Jesus again spoke to them, saying: I am the light of the world. The one following me will certainly not walk in the darkness, but will have the light of life.

Therefore the Pharisees said to him: You are bearing witness about yourself; your testimony is not true.

Jesus answered and said to them: Even if I bear witness about myself, my testimony is true, because I know where I came from and where I am going; but you people do not know where I come from or where I am going.

You judge according to the flesh; I am not judging anyone.

And if I do judge, however, my judgment is genuine, because I am not alone, but I and the Father who sent me.

And in your own law it has been written that the testimony of two men is true.

I am the one bearing witness about myself, and the Father who sent me bears witness about me.

Therefore they were saying to him: Where is your Father? Jesus answered: You know neither me nor my Father. If you had known me, you would have known my Father also.

These words he spoke in the treasury, teaching in the temple; and no one seized him, for his hour had not yet come.

Therefore he said again to them: I am going away, and you will seek me, and you will die in your sin; where I am going you are not able to come.

Therefore the Jews were saying: Surely he will not kill himself, will he, because he says: Where I am going you are not able to come?

And he was saying to them: You are from below, I am from above; you are of this world, I am not of this world.

I said therefore to you that you will die in your sins; for unless you believe that I am he, you will die in your sins.

I have many things to speak and to judge concerning you; but the one who sent me is true, and what I have heard from him, these things I speak to the world.

They did not understand that he was speaking to them about the Father.

Jesus therefore said to them: When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am he, and from myself I do nothing, but just as the Father taught me, these things I speak.

And the one who sent me is with me; he has not left me alone, the Father, because I always do the things pleasing to him.

As he was speaking these things, many believed in him.

Jesus therefore was saying to those Jews who had believed in him: If you remain in my word, you are truly my disciples,

and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.

They answered him: We are Abraham's offspring and have never been enslaved to anyone; how do you say, You will become free?

Jesus answered them: Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave of sin.

Now the slave does not remain in the household forever; the son remains forever.

If therefore the Son sets you free, you will be truly free.

I know that you are Abraham's offspring; but you are seeking to kill me, because my word finds no place in you.

They answered and said to him: Our father is Abraham. Jesus says to them: If you are Abraham's children, you would do the works of Abraham.

But now you are seeking to kill me, a man who has spoken the truth to you which I heard from God; this Abraham did not do.

You are doing the works of your father. They said therefore to him: We were not born of sexual immorality; we have one Father, God.

Jesus therefore said to them: If God were your Father, you would love me; for I came from God and I am here. For I have not come on my own authority, but he sent me.

Why do you not understand my speech? Because you cannot hear my word.

You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning and has not stood in the truth, because there is no truth in him. Whenever he speaks the lie, he speaks from his own nature, because he is a liar and the father of it.

But because I speak the truth, you do not believe me.

Which of you convicts me of sin? But if I speak the truth, why do you not believe me?

Whoever is of God hears the words of God; for this reason you do not hear, because you are not of God.

The Jews therefore answered and said to him: Are we not right in saying that you are a Samaritan and have a demon?

Jesus answered: I do not have a demon, but I honor my Father, and you dishonor me.

Yet I do not seek my own glory; there is one who seeks it and judges.

Truly, truly, I say to you: if anyone keeps my word, he will never see death forever.

The Jews said to him: Now we know that you have a demon. Abraham died, and the prophets, and you say: If anyone keeps my word, he will never taste death forever.

Surely you are not greater than our father Abraham, who died, are you? And the prophets died too. Who do you make yourself out to be?

Jesus answered: If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing. It is my Father who glorifies me, of whom you say that he is your God,

And you have not known him; but I know him. If I were to say I do not know him, I would be a liar like you; but I know him and I keep his word.

Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day, and he saw it and rejoiced.

The Jews therefore said to him: You are not yet fifty years old, and you have seen Abraham?

Jesus said to them: Truly, truly, I say to you: before Abraham was, I am.

So they picked up stones to throw at him, but Jesus hid himself and went out of the temple.
