John 20

Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene comes early, while it was still dark, to the tomb, and she sees the stone removed from the tomb.

So she runs and comes to Simon Peter and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and says to them, ‘They have taken away the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him.’

So Peter and the other disciple went out, and they were coming to the tomb;

Now the two were running together, and the other disciple ran on ahead, more quickly than Peter, and came to the tomb first.

And stooping down, he sees the linen cloths lying there; however, he did not go in.

Then Simon Peter also comes, following him, and he entered into the tomb and observes the linen cloths lying there,

and the face cloth that had been on his head, not lying with the linen cloths but rolled up in a place by itself.

Then, therefore, the other disciple also, who had come first to the tomb, entered, and he saw and believed;

For they did not yet know the Scripture, that it was necessary for him to rise from the dead.

So the disciples went away again to their own homes.

But Mary stood outside at the tomb, weeping. So as she wept, she stooped down into the tomb,

and she beholds two angels in white, sitting, one at the head and one at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain.

And they say to her: Woman, why are you weeping? She says to them: Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.

Having said these things, she turned back and beholds Jesus standing there, and she did not know that it was Jesus.

Jesus says to her: Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking? She, supposing that he was the gardener, says to him: Sir, if you have carried him off, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.

Jesus says to her, ‘Mary.’ She, turning around, says to him in Hebrew, ‘Rabboni!’ — which is to say, Teacher.

Jesus says to her: Do not cling to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to my brothers and say to them: I am ascending to my Father and your Father, and my God and your God.

Mary Magdalene comes, announcing to the disciples, ‘I have seen the Lord,’ and that he had said these things to her.

So when it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors were locked where the disciples were gathered for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst and says to them: Peace to you.

And having said this, he showed them both his hands and his side. The disciples therefore rejoiced when they saw the Lord.

So Jesus said to them again: Peace to you. As the Father has sent me, I also send you.

And having said this, he breathed on them and says to them, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit.’

If you forgive the sins of any, they have been forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they have been retained.

But Thomas, one of the Twelve, the one called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came.

So the other disciples were saying to him: We have seen the Lord. But he said to them: Unless I see in his hands the mark of the nails, and put my finger into the mark of the nails, and put my hand into his side, I will by no means believe.

And eight days later his disciples were again inside, and Thomas was with them. Jesus comes, though the doors were locked, and stood in the midst and said, ‘Peace to you.’

Then he says to Thomas: Bring your finger here and see my hands, and bring your hand and put it into my side; and do not be unbelieving, but believing.

Thomas answered and said to him, ‘My Lord and my God!’

Jesus says to him: Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.

So Jesus did many other signs as well in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book;

But these things have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in his name.
