John 12

So Jesus, six days before the Passover, came to Bethany, where Lazarus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead.

So they made a supper for him there, and Martha was serving; and Lazarus was one of those reclining with him.

So Mary, taking a pound of very expensive pure nard perfumed oil, anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped his feet with her hair; and the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfumed oil.

But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples, the one who was about to betray him, said,

"Why was this perfumed oil not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?"

He said this not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief; and having the money box, he used to pilfer what was put into it.

So Jesus said, "Leave her alone, so that she may keep it for the day of my burial.

For the poor you always have with you, but me you do not always have.

So a large crowd of the Jews learned that he was there, and they came not because of Jesus only, but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead.

But the chief priests also plotted to kill Lazarus,

because on account of him many of the Jews were going away and believing in Jesus.

On the next day the large crowd that had come to the feast, having heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem,

took the branches of the palm trees and went out to meet him, and began shouting: "Hosanna! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord! And blessed is the King of Israel!"

And Jesus, having found a young donkey, sat upon it, just as it is written:

"Fear not, daughter of Zion; behold, your king is coming, seated on a colt of a donkey."

His disciples did not understand these things at first; but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things had been written about him and that they had done these things to him.

So the crowd that was with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead was bearing witness.

For this reason also the crowd met him, because they heard that he had done this sign.

So the Pharisees said to one another, "You see that you are gaining nothing. Look, the whole world has gone after him."

Now there were certain Greeks among those who were going up to worship at the feast.

So these came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida of Galilee, and were asking him, saying, "Sir, we wish to see Jesus."

Philip came and told Andrew; and Andrew and Philip came and told Jesus.

And Jesus answered them, saying, "The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.

Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.

The one who loves his life destroys it, and the one who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life.

If anyone serves me, let him follow me; and where I am, there also my servant will be. And if anyone serves me, the Father will honor him.

"Now my soul is troubled. And what shall I say? 'Father, save me from this hour'? But it is for this reason that I have come to this hour.

"Father, glorify your name." So a voice came from heaven: "I have both glorified it, and I will glorify it again."

So the crowd that stood there and heard it was saying that it was thunder; others were saying, "An angel has spoken to him."

Jesus answered and said, "This voice has come not for my sake, but for yours.

Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be cast out.

And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.

He said this signifying by what kind of death he was about to die.

So the crowd answered him, "We have heard from the law that the Christ abides forever; and how is it that you say that the Son of Man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of Man?"

So Jesus said to them, "The light is among you for a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, so that darkness may not overtake you. The one who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going.

While you have the light, believe in the light, so that you may become sons of light." These things Jesus spoke, and departing he hid himself from them.

But although he had done so many signs before them, they were not believing in him,

so that the word of Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled, which he said: "Lord, who has believed our report? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?"

For this reason they were not able to believe, because Isaiah said again:

"He has blinded their eyes and hardened their heart, so that they would not see with their eyes and understand with their heart and turn, and I would heal them."

Isaiah said these things because he saw Christ's glory, and he spoke about him.

Nevertheless, even among the rulers many believed in him, but on account of the Pharisees they were not confessing, so that they would not become expelled from the synagogue.

For they loved the glory of men more than the glory of God.

And Jesus cried out and said: The one who believes in me does not believe in me but in the one who sent me;

and the one who beholds me beholds the one who sent me.

I have come as light into the world, so that everyone who believes in me may not remain in darkness.

And if anyone hears my words and does not keep them, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world but to save the world.

The one who rejects me and does not receive my words has one who judges him: the word that I spoke — that one will judge him on the last day.

For I did not speak from myself, but the Father who sent me — he himself has given me a commandment as to what I should say and what I should speak.

And I know that his commandment is eternal life. What therefore I speak, just as the Father has said to me, so I speak.
