Genesis 47

And Joseph came and told Pharaoh, and said, 'My father and my brothers, and their flocks and their cattle and all that is theirs, have come from the land of Canaan, and look, they are in the land of Goshen.'

And from the whole of his brothers he took five men and presented them before Pharaoh.

And Pharaoh said to his brothers: 'What is your occupation?' And they said to Pharaoh: 'Your servants are shepherds of flocks — both we and our fathers.'

And they said to Pharaoh, 'To sojourn in the land we have come, for there is no pasture for the flock that belongs to your servants, for the famine is severe in the land of Canaan. And now, please let your servants dwell in the land of Goshen.'

And Pharaoh said to Joseph, saying: 'Your father and your brothers have come to you.'

The land of Egypt is before you; in the best of the land settle your father and your brothers — let them dwell in the land of Goshen. And if you know there are able men among them, set them as chiefs of livestock over what is mine.

And Joseph brought Jacob his father and had him stand before Pharaoh, and Jacob blessed Pharaoh.

And Pharaoh said to Jacob: 'How many are the years of your life?'

And Jacob said to Pharaoh: 'The years of my sojourning are one hundred and thirty years. The days of the years of my life have been few and hard, and they have not reached the years of the life of my fathers in the days of their sojourning.'

And Jacob blessed Pharaoh and went out from before Pharaoh.

And Joseph settled his father and his brothers and gave them a possession in the land of Egypt, in the best of the land, in the land of Rameses, as Pharaoh had commanded.

And Joseph sustained his father and his brothers and all his father's household with food, according to the number of the little ones.

And there was no food in all the land, for the famine was very heavy, and the land of Egypt and the land of Canaan languished from before the famine.

And Joseph gathered all the silver that was found in the land of Egypt and in the land of Canaan, in exchange for the grain that they were buying, and Joseph brought the silver to Pharaoh's house.

And the silver was exhausted from the land of Egypt and from the land of Canaan, and all the Egyptians came to Joseph, saying: 'Give us food! Why should we die before you, for the silver is gone?'

And Joseph said: Bring your livestock, and I will give you food in exchange for your livestock, if the silver is gone.

And they brought their livestock to Joseph, and Joseph gave them food in exchange for the horses, and for the flocks of sheep and the herds of cattle and the donkeys. And he supplied them with food in exchange for all their livestock that year.

And when that year was ended, they came to him in the second year and said to him: We will not hide from my lord that the silver is gone, and the herds of livestock have gone to my lord — nothing remains before my lord except our bodies and our land.

Why should we die before your eyes, both we and our land? Buy us and our land for bread, and we and our land will be servants to Pharaoh. And give seed, so that we may live and not die, and that the land not become desolate.'

And Joseph bought all the ground of Egypt for Pharaoh, for the Egyptians sold, each man his field, for the famine was strong upon them. And the land became Pharaoh's.

And as for the people, he relocated them to the cities, from one end of the border of Egypt to the other end of it.

Only the land of the priests he did not buy, for there was a prescribed portion for the priests from Pharaoh, and they ate their prescribed portion that Pharaoh had given to them; therefore they did not sell their land.

And Joseph said to the people: See, I have bought you this day and the land of you all for Pharaoh. Here is seed for you, and you shall sow the land.

And it will be at the harvests that you will give a fifth to Pharaoh, and the four portions will be yours for seed of the field and for food of you all and for those in the houses of you all and to eat for the little ones of you all.

And they said, 'You have kept us alive! May we find favor in the eyes of my lord, and we will be servants to Pharaoh.'

And Joseph made it a statute unto this day over the land of Egypt, that a fifth belongs to Pharaoh — only the land of the priests alone did not belong to Pharaoh.

And Israel dwelt in the land of Egypt, in the land of Goshen, and they took hold of it, and they were fruitful and multiplied greatly.

And Jacob lived in the land of Egypt seventeen years, and the days of Jacob, the years of his life, were seven years and forty and a hundred years.

And the days of Israel drew near to die, and he called to his son Joseph and said to him: 'If please I have found favor in your eyes, place please your hand under my thigh, and do with me kindness and faithfulness — do not bury me in Egypt.'

"And I will lie down with my fathers, and you shall carry me out of Egypt and bury me in their burial place." And he said, "I will do according to your word."

And he said, 'Swear to me.' And he swore to him. And Israel bowed at the head of the bed.
