Genesis 40

And it was after these things that the cupbearer of the king of Egypt and the baker sinned against their lord, the king of Egypt.

And Pharaoh was angry at his two officers, at the chief of the cupbearers and at the chief of the bakers.

And he put them in custody in the house of the captain of the guard, in the prison, the place where Joseph was bound.

And the captain of the guard appointed Joseph with them, and he attended to them. And they were in custody for some time.

And the two of them dreamed a dream, each his own dream, in a single night, each according to the interpretation of his dream — the cupbearer and the baker who belonged to the king of Egypt, who were confined in the prison.

And Joseph came to them in the morning, and saw them, and behold, they were troubled.

And he asked Pharaoh's officials who were with him in the custody of his lord's house, saying, 'Why are your faces bad today?'

And they said to him, "We have dreamed a dream, and there is no one to interpret it." And Joseph said to them, "Do not interpretations belong to God? Tell them to me, please."

And the chief cupbearer recounted his dream to Joseph and said to him, In my dream, and look, a vine was before me.

And on the vine were three branches, and it was as though it budded, its blossoms shot up, and its clusters ripened into grapes.

And Pharaoh's cup was in my hand, and I took the grapes and squeezed them into Pharaoh's cup, and I placed the cup on Pharaoh's palm.

And Joseph said to him, "This is its interpretation: the three branches are three days.

Within three more days Pharaoh will lift up your head and restore you to your post, and you will place Pharaoh's cup in his hand, according to the former custom when you were his cupbearer.

But if you remember me when it goes well with you, please deal kindly with me, and mention me to Pharaoh, and bring me out of this house.

For indeed I was stolen away from the land of the Hebrews, and also here I have done nothing for which they should put me in the pit.'

And the chief of the bakers saw that the interpretation was good, and he said to Joseph, 'I also — in my dream, look — three baskets of white bread were upon my head.'

And in the uppermost basket there was every kind of baked food for Pharaoh, and the flying things were eating them from the basket above my head.'

And Joseph answered and said, 'This is its interpretation: the three baskets are three days.

Within three days Pharaoh will lift up your head from upon you and will hang you on a tree, and the flying things will eat your flesh from upon you.'

And it was on the third day, the day of Pharaoh's birth, that he made a feast for all his servants, and he lifted up the head of the chief of the cupbearers and the head of the chief of the bakers in the midst of his servants.

And he restored the chief cupbearer to his cupbearing, and he placed the cup in the palm of Pharaoh.

And the chief baker he hanged, just as Joseph had interpreted for them.

But the chief cupbearer did not remember Joseph, and he forgot him.
