Genesis 34
And Dinah, the daughter of Leah whom she had borne to Jacob, went out to look at the daughters of the land.
And Shechem son of Hamor the Hivite, the leader of the land, saw her. And he took her, and lay with her, and violated her.
And his soul clung to Dinah the daughter of Jacob, and he loved the young woman and spoke to the heart of the young woman.
And Shechem said to Hamor his father, saying: Get me this young woman as a wife.
Now Jacob had heard that he had defiled Dinah his daughter, but his sons were in the field with his livestock, and Jacob kept silent until they came.
And Hamor, the father of Shechem, went out to Jacob to speak with him.
And the sons of Jacob came from the field when they heard the news, and the men were grievously offended, and they were very angry, for he had done a disgraceful thing against Israel by lying with Jacob's daughter, and such a thing ought not to be done.
And Hamor spoke with them, saying: Shechem my son — his soul longs for your daughter. Give her to him please as a wife.
Intermarry with us: the daughters of you all give to us, and the daughters of ours take for yourselves.
And with us you may dwell, and the land will be before you; dwell in it and trade freely in it and take possession of it.
And Shechem said to her father and to her brothers: May I find favor in your eyes, and whatever you say to me I will give.
Make the bride-price and gift as great as you will upon me, and I will give whatever you say to me. Only give me the maiden to wife.
And the sons of Jacob answered Shechem and Hamor his father with deceit, and they spoke, because he had defiled Dinah their sister.
And they said to them, We are not able to do this thing, to give our sister to a man who has a foreskin, for that would be a reproach to us.
Only in this will we consent to you: if you will be as we are, by having every male of you all circumcised.
And we will give our daughters to you, and we will take the daughters of you all for ourselves, and we will dwell with you and become one people.
But if you will not listen to us to be circumcised, then we will take our daughter and go.
And their words seemed good in the eyes of Hamor and in the eyes of Shechem son of Hamor.
And the young man did not delay to do the thing, for he delighted in Jacob's daughter — and he was more honored than all the household of his father.
And Hamor and Shechem his son came to the gate of their city and spoke to the men of their city, saying,
These men are at peace with us. Let them dwell in the land and trade in it, for the land — behold, it is broad of extent before them. Let us take their daughters for ourselves as wives, and let us give our daughters to them.
Only on this condition will the men consent to dwell with us, to become one people: when every male among us is circumcised as they are circumcised.
Their livestock and their acquisitions and all their animals — will they not be ours? Only let us consent to them, and they will dwell with us.'
And they listened to Hamor and to Shechem his son — all who went out at the gate of his city — and every male was circumcised, all who went out at the gate of his city.
And it was on the third day, when they were in pain, that two of Jacob's sons, Simeon and Levi, Dinah's brothers, each took his sword and came upon the city in safety and killed every male.
And Hamor and Shechem his son they killed with the edge of the sword, and they took Dinah from the house of Shechem and went out.
The sons of Jacob came upon the slain and plundered the city, because they had defiled their sister.
Their flocks and their cattle and their donkeys, and what was in the city, and what was in the field, they took.
And all their wealth and all their little ones and their wives they took captive and plundered, and all that was in the house.
And Jacob said to Simeon and to Levi, 'You have troubled me, making me stink among the inhabitants of the land, among the Canaanites and the Perizzites. And I am men of small number. And they will gather against me and strike me, and I will be destroyed, I and my household.'
And they said, Should he treat our sister as a prostitute?
