Exodus 17
And all the congregation of the sons of Israel set out from the wilderness of Sin by their stages, according to the command of the LORD, and camped at Rephidim; but there was no water for the people to drink.
And the people contended with Moses and said, 'Give us water to drink.' And Moses said to them, 'Why do you contend with me? Why do you test the LORD?'
And the people thirsted there for water, and the people grumbled against Moses and said, 'Why is it you have brought us up from Egypt, to kill me and my sons and my livestock with thirst?'
And Moses cried to the LORD, saying, 'What shall I do with this people? In a little while they will stone me!'
And the LORD said to Moses, 'Pass on before the people, and take with you some of the elders of Israel, and take in your hand the staff with which you struck the Nile, and go.
Behold, I will be standing before you there on the rock at Horeb; you shall strike the rock, and water will come out of it, and the people will drink.' And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.
And he called the name of the place Massah and Meribah, because of the contention of the sons of Israel and because of their testing the LORD, saying, 'Is the LORD among us or not?'
And Amalek came and fought with Israel at Rephidim.
And Moses said to Joshua, 'Choose men for us and go out, fight against Amalek; tomorrow I will be standing on the top of the hill with the staff of God in my hand.'
And Joshua did as Moses said to him, to fight with Amalek; and Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill.
And it came to pass, when Moses raised his hand, Israel prevailed; and when he let his hand down, Amalek prevailed.
And the hands of Moses were heavy; and they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it; and Aaron and Hur held up his hands, one on this side and one on that side; and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun.
And Joshua overwhelmed Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword.
And the LORD said to Moses: Write this as a memorial in a book and recite it in the ears of Joshua, for I will utterly blot out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven.
And Moses built an altar and called its name YHWH-Nissi.
And he said, ‘For a hand is upon the throne of Yah; the LORD has war against Amalek from generation to generation.’
