Deuteronomy 29
These are the words of the covenant that the LORD commanded Moses to make with the children of Israel in the land of Moab, besides the covenant that he had made with them at Horeb.
And Moses called all Israel and said to them: 'You have seen all that the Lord did before your eyes in the land of Egypt, to Pharaoh and to all his servants and to all his land --'
the great trials that your eyes saw -- the signs and those great wonders.
Yet the Lord has not given to you all a heart to know, or eyes to see, or ears to hear, until this day.
And I led you forty years in the wilderness. Your garments did not wear out upon you, and your sandal did not wear out from your foot.
Bread you did not eat, and wine and strong drink you did not drink, so that you might know that I am the Lord your God of you all.
And when you came to this place, Sihon king of Heshbon and Og king of Bashan came out against us to battle, and we struck them down.
And we took their land and gave it as an inheritance to the Reubenites and the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh.
Therefore keep the words of this covenant and do them, that you may prosper in all that you do.
You are standing today, all of you, before the Lord your God of you all -- the heads of you all, the tribes of you all, the elders of you all, and the officials of you all -- every man of Israel.
your little ones, your wives, and your sojourner who is in the midst of your camp, from the one who chops your wood to the one who draws your water.
that you may enter into the covenant of the Lord your God and into his sworn oath that the Lord your God is making with you today,
in order to establish you today as his people, and that he will be to you as God, just as he spoke to you and just as he swore to your fathers -- to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.
But not with you alone am I making this covenant and this oath,
For [it is] with the one who stands here with us today before the Lord our God, and with the one who is not here with us today.
for you know how we lived in the land of Egypt and how we passed through the midst of the nations through which you passed;
and you saw their detestable things and their idols -- wood and stone, silver and gold -- which were among them.
Lest there be among you all a man or a woman or a family or a tribe whose heart is turning away today from the LORD our God to go and serve the gods of those nations -- lest there be among you all a root bearing poison and wormwood.
And when such a person hears the words of this sworn oath and blesses himself in his heart, saying, 'I shall have peace, though I walk in the stubbornness of my heart,' thus sweeping away the watered and the parched alike.
The Lord will not be willing to forgive him, for then the anger of the Lord and his zeal will smoke against that man, and all the curse written in this scroll will settle on him, and the Lord will blot out his name from under the heavens.
And the Lord will set him apart for evil from all the tribes of Israel, according to all the curses of the covenant written in this book of the Torah.
The last generation shall say -- your children who arise after you and the foreigner who comes from a distant land -- when they see the plagues of that land and the sicknesses with which the LORD has afflicted it.
Sulfur and salt, all its land burned; it is not sown and does not sprout, and no vegetation grows in it -- like the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim, which the Lord overthrew in his burning anger and wrath.
And all the nations will say, 'Why has the Lord done thus to this land? What is this great burning of anger?'
And they will say: 'Because they forsook the covenant of the Lord, the God of their fathers, which he cut with them when he brought them out of the land of Egypt.'
And they went and served other gods and bowed down to them -- gods whom they had not known and whom he had not allotted to them.
And the anger of the Lord burned against that land, bringing upon it all the curse that is written in this scroll.
And the Lord uprooted them from their land in anger and in fury and in great wrath, and cast them into another land, as it is this day.
The secret things belong to the LORD our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our children forever, to do all the words of this Torah.
