Deuteronomy 18
The Levitical priests, all the tribe of Levi, shall have no portion or inheritance with Israel; the fire-offerings of the Lord and his inheritance they shall eat.
And an inheritance shall not be for him among his kinsmen; the Lord is his inheritance, just as he declared to him.
And this shall be the due of the priests from the people, from those who offer a sacrifice, whether it is an ox or a sheep: they shall give to the priest the shoulder and the two cheeks and the stomach.
The firstfruits of your grain, your new wine, and your olive oil, and the first of the fleece of your flock, you shall give to him.
For the Lord your God chose him out of all your tribes to stand and to minister in the name of the Lord, he and his sons, all the days.
And if a Levite comes from any of your gates, from all Israel, where he has been sojourning there, and he comes with all the desire of his soul to the place that the Lord shall choose --
then he shall minister in the name of the LORD his God, like all his brothers the Levites who stand there before the LORD.
He shall eat equal portions, besides what he receives from the sale of his family inheritance.
When you come into the land that the Lord your God is giving to you, you shall not learn to do according to the abominations of those nations.
There shall not be found among you one who passes his son or his daughter through the fire, one who practices divination, one who reads omens, or one who interprets omens, or a sorcerer,
or one who casts spells, or one who consults a medium or a spiritist, or one who inquires of the dead.
For an abomination of the Lord is everyone who does these things, and on account of these abominations the Lord your God is about to drive them out from before you.
You shall be wholehearted with the Lord your God.
For these nations whom you are about to dispossess listen to those who practice omens and to diviners, but as for you, the LORD your God has not allowed it for you.
A prophet from your midst, from your brothers, like me, the LORD your God will raise up for you -- to him you shall listen.
just as all that you asked of the Lord your God at Horeb on the day of the assembly, saying, 'Let me not hear again the voice of the Lord my God, nor see this great fire anymore, lest I die.'
And the Lord said to me, 'They have done well in what they have spoken.'
A prophet I will raise up for them from among their brothers, like you, and I will put my words in his mouth, and he shall speak to them all that I command him.
And it shall be, the man who does not listen to my words that he speaks in my name -- I myself will require an account from him.
But the prophet who acts presumptuously by speaking a word in my name that I did not commission him to speak, and who speaks in the name of other gods -- that prophet shall die.
And if you say in your heart, 'How shall we know the word that the LORD has not spoken?'
When the prophet speaks in the name of the LORD and the word is not fulfilled and does not come to pass — that is the word the LORD has not spoken; in arrogance the prophet spoke it; you shall not be afraid of him.
