Acts 20

Now after the uproar had ceased, Paul sent for the disciples, and when he had encouraged them and taken leave of them, he departed to go to Macedonia.

And having passed through those regions and exhorted them with many words, he came to Greece;

And after he had spent three months there, when a plot was made against him by the Jews as he was about to set sail for Syria, he decided to return through Macedonia.

And there accompanied him as far as Asia Sopater son of Pyrrhus, a Berean; and of the Thessalonians, Aristarchus and Secundus; and Gaius of Derbe and Timothy; and of the Asians, Tychicus and Trophimus.

But these went on ahead and were waiting for us at Troas;

But we sailed away from Philippi after the days of Unleavened Bread, and within five days we came to them at Troas, where we stayed seven days.

And on the first day of the week, when we had gathered together to break bread, Paul was speaking to them, intending to depart on the next day, and he prolonged his discourse until midnight.

Now there were many lamps in the upper room where we were gathered.

And a certain young man named Eutychus, sitting at the window, was sinking into a deep sleep as Paul talked on still longer; and overcome by sleep, he fell down from the third story and was picked up dead.

But Paul went down, threw himself upon him, and taking him in his arms said, Do not be alarmed, for his life is in him.

And when he had gone up and broken the bread and eaten, he talked with them a long while, until daybreak, and so departed.

And they brought the boy alive, and were comforted beyond measure.

But we went on ahead to the ship and set sail for Assos, intending there to take Paul on board; for so he had arranged it, intending himself to go on foot.

And when he met us at Assos, we took him aboard and came to Mitylene;

And from there, having sailed away, on the following day we arrived opposite Chios, and on the next we crossed over to Samos, and having stayed at Trogyllium, on the day after we came to Miletus.

For Paul had decided to sail past Ephesus, so that he would not have to spend time in Asia; for he was hurrying to be at Jerusalem, if it were possible for him, on the day of Pentecost.

And from Miletus he sent to Ephesus and called for the elders of the church.

And when they had come to him, he said to them, ’You yourselves know, from the first day that I set foot in Asia, how I was with you the whole time,

serving the Lord with all humility and with tears and trials that befell me through the plots of the Jews;

how I kept back nothing that was profitable, but declared it to you and taught you publicly and from house to house,

testifying both to Jews and to Greeks repentance toward God and faith in our Lord Jesus Christ.

And now, behold, bound in the Spirit, I am going to Jerusalem, not knowing what will happen to me there,

except that the Holy Spirit solemnly testifies to me in every city, saying that chains and afflictions await me.

But I count my life of no value to myself, so that I may finish my course and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God.

And now behold, I know that you will no longer see my face, all of you among whom I went about proclaiming the kingdom of God.

Therefore I testify to you this very day that I am innocent of the blood of all;

for I did not shrink from declaring to you the whole counsel of God.

Take heed therefore to yourselves and to all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God, which he obtained with the blood of his own Son.

I know that after my departure fierce wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock,

and from among your own selves men will arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after them.

Therefore be watchful, remembering that for three years, night and day, I did not cease to admonish each one with tears.

And now I commit you, brothers, to God and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up and to give you the inheritance among all those who are sanctified.

I coveted no one’s silver or gold or clothing.

You yourselves know that these hands ministered to my needs and to those who were with me.

In all things I showed you that by thus laboring we must help the weak, and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that he himself said, ’It is more blessed to give than to receive.’

And when he had said these things, he knelt down with them all and prayed.

And there was much weeping among them all, and falling upon Paul's neck they kissed him.

grieving most of all over the word he had spoken, that they were no longer going to see his face. And they escorted him to the ship.
