Acts 2
When the day of Pentecost was being fulfilled, they were all together in one place.
And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a violent wind being borne along, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting.
And there appeared to them tongues distributing themselves like fire, and one sat upon each of them.
And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues, as the Spirit was giving them utterance.
Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven.
When this sound occurred, the multitude came together and was bewildered, because each one was hearing them speak in his own dialect.
And they were all astonished and marveling, saying to one another, Behold, are not all these who are speaking Galileans?
And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own dialect in which we were born?
Parthians and Medes and Elamites and those inhabiting Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,
Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya around Cyrene, and the visitors from Rome,
Cretans and Arabs -- we hear them speaking in our own tongues the mighty works of God.
And they were all amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, What does this mean?
But others, mocking, were saying, They are full of new wine.
But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice and spoke out to them: Men of Judea and all those dwelling in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and give ear to my words.
For these men are not drunk as you suppose, for it is the third hour of the day.
But this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel:
And it will be in the last days, says God, I will pour out from my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters will prophesy, and your young men will see visions, and your elders will dream dreams.
Even upon my servants and upon my handmaidens in those days I will pour out from my Spirit, and they will prophesy.
And I will give wonders in the sky above and signs on the earth below, blood and fire and vapor of smoke.
The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the great and glorious day of the Lord comes.
And it will be that everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord will be saved.
Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a man commended to you by God through mighty works and wonders and signs that God did through him in your midst, as you yourselves know --
this man, delivered up by the determined plan and foreknowledge of God, you executed by nailing him through the hand of lawless men.
whom God raised up, having loosed the birth-pangs of death, inasmuch as it was not possible for him to be held by it.
For David says concerning him, I saw the Lord always before me, because he is at my right hand, that I may not be shaken.
Therefore my heart was glad and my tongue rejoiced; moreover my flesh also will dwell in hope.
For you will not abandon my soul to Hades, nor will you allow your Holy One to see decay.
You have made known to me the paths of life; you will fill me with gladness with your presence.
Brothers, I may speak freely to you concerning the patriarch David, that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is among us to this day.
Being therefore a prophet and knowing that God had sworn to him with an oath to set one of his descendants upon his throne,
he foresaw this and spoke concerning the resurrection of the Christ, that neither was his soul left to Hades nor did his flesh see decay.
This Jesus God has raised up, of which we all are witnesses.
Therefore, having been exalted to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out this which you both see and hear.
For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he himself says, The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at my right hand,
until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet.'"
Let all the house of Israel therefore know with certainty that God has made him both Lord and Christ -- this Jesus whom you crucified.
Now when they heard this, they were pierced to the heart, and they said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, "What shall we do, men, brothers?"
Peter said to them, "Repent," he declared, "and let each one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
For the promise is to you and to your children and to all those who are far off, as many as the Lord our God may call to himself.
And with many other words he solemnly testified and was urging them, saying, "Be saved from this crooked generation."
So those who received his word gladly were baptized, and there were added on that day about three thousand souls.
Now they were devoting themselves to the teaching of the apostles and to the fellowship, and to the breaking of the bread and to the prayers.
Now awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were taking place through the apostles.
And all those who believed were together and had all things in common,
and they were selling their possessions and goods and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need.
And day by day, devoting themselves with one accord in the temple courts and breaking bread from house to house, they were partaking of food with gladness and simplicity of heart,
praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord was adding to them day by day those who were being saved.
