2 Samuel 8

¹After this, David struck the Philistines and subdued them, and David took Metheg-ammah from the control of the Philistines.

²And he struck Moab and measured them with a cord, laying them down on the ground; he measured two cord-lengths to put to death, and the full cord-length to keep alive. So Moab became subject to David, bearing tribute.

³David struck Hadadezer son of Rehob, king of Zobah, as he went to restore his power at the River Euphrates.

⁴David captured from him 1,700 horsemen and 20,000 foot soldiers. David hamstrung all the chariot horses but kept 100 of them.

⁵When Aram of Damascus came to help Hadadezer king of Zobah, David struck down twenty-two thousand men of Aram.

⁶And David placed garrisons in Aram of Damascus, and Aram became subject to David, bearing tribute. And the Lord saved David wherever he went.

⁷David took the golden shields that were on the servants of Hadadezer and brought them to Jerusalem.

⁸From Betah and from Berothah, cities of Hadadezer, King David took a very great amount of bronze.

⁹When Toi king of Hamath heard that David had struck down all the army of Hadadezer,

¹⁰Toi sent his son Joram to King David to ask after his welfare and to bless him, because David had fought against Hadadezer and struck him; for Hadadezer had been a man of wars with Toi. In his hand were vessels of silver, vessels of gold, and vessels of bronze.

¹¹Also these King David consecrated to the Lord, with the silver and the gold that he had consecrated from all the nations that he had subdued.

¹²from Aram, Moab, the Ammonites, the Philistines, and Amalek, and from the plunder of Hadadezer son of Rehob, king of Zobah.

¹³David made a name for himself when he returned from defeating eighteen thousand Arameans in the Valley of Salt.

¹⁴He placed garrisons in Edom; in all of Edom he placed garrisons, and all Edom became servants to David. And the Lord saved David wherever he went.

¹⁵David reigned over all Israel, and David was executing justice and righteousness for all his people.

¹⁶Joab son of Zeruiah was over the army, and Jehoshaphat son of Ahilud was the recorder.

¹⁷Zadok son of Ahitub and Ahimelech son of Abiathar were priests, and Seraiah was secretary.

¹⁸Benaiah son of Jehoiada was over the Cherethites and the Pelethites; and the sons of David were priests.
