Chronicles 23

And David was old and full of days, and he made Solomon his son king over Israel.

And he gathered all the princes of Israel and the priests and the Levites.

And the Levites were counted from thirty years old and upward, and their number by heads, counting men, was thirty-eight thousand.

Of these, twenty-four thousand to oversee the work of the house of the Lord, and six thousand officers and judges.

And four thousand were gatekeepers, and four thousand were praising the LORD with instruments that I made for praise.

And David divided them into divisions, according to the sons of Levi: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.

Of the Gershonites: Ladan and Shimei.

The sons of Ladan the chief: Jehiel, and Zetham, and Joel — three.

The sons of Shimei: Shelomoth, Shelomith, and Haziel and Haran -- three. These were the heads of the fathers' houses belonging to Ladan.

And the sons of Shimei: Jahath, Zina, Jeush, and Beriah; these were the sons of Shimei, four.

And Jahath was the chief, and Zizah the second; but Jeush and Beriah did not multiply sons, and they became one household for enrollment.

The sons of Kohath: Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel, four.

The sons of Amram: Aaron and Moses. And Aaron was set apart to consecrate the most holy things, he and his sons forever, to burn offerings before the LORD, to serve him, and to bless in his name forever.

And Moses the man of God — his sons were enrolled under the tribe of Levi.

The sons of Moses: Gershom and Eliezer.

The sons of Gershom: Shebuel the chief.

And the sons of Eliezer: Rehabiah the chief. And Eliezer had no other sons, but the sons of Rehabiah multiplied exceedingly.

The sons of Izhar: Shelomith the chief.

The sons of Hebron: Jeriah the first, Amariah the second, Jahaziel the third, and Jekameam the fourth.

The sons of Uzziel: Micah the chief, and Isshiah the second.

The sons of Merari: Mahli and Mushi. The sons of Mahli: Eleazar and Kish.

And Eleazar died and he had no sons, but only daughters; and the sons of Kish, their kinsmen, married them.

The sons of Mushi: Mahli, and Eder, and Jerimoth — three.

These are the sons of Levi, by their ancestral houses: the heads of the fathers' houses, according to their enrollment by the count of names, head by head, who did the work for the service of the house of the LORD, from twenty years old and upward.

For David said: The Lord, God of Israel, has given rest to his people, and he will dwell in Jerusalem forever.

And also, the Levites no longer need to carry the tabernacle and all its articles for its service.

For by the last commands of David, these are the numbers of the sons of Levi from twenty years old and upward.

For their assignment was at the side of the sons of Aaron, for the service of the house of the LORD, over the courts and the chambers and the purification of all holy things, and the work of the service of the house of God.

and for the showbread and for the fine flour for the grain offering, and for the wafers of unleavened bread, and for the griddle and for the deep pan, and for all measures and capacities.

and to stand every morning to give thanks and to praise the Lord, and likewise in the evening.

and for all the offering of burnt offerings to the LORD on the Sabbaths, at the new moons, and at the appointed feasts, according to the number prescribed by the ordinance continually before the LORD.

And they shall keep the charge of the tent of meeting, and the charge of the sanctuary, and the charge of the sons of Aaron their brothers, for the service of the house of the LORD.
