1 Chronicles 17

¹And it came to pass, when David had settled in his house, that David said to Nathan the prophet, 'Look, I am dwelling in a house of cedars, while the ark of the covenant of the Lord is under tent curtains.'

²And Nathan said to David, 'All that is in your heart, do, for God is with you.'

³And it came about that night that the word of God came to Nathan, saying:

⁴Go and tell David my servant, 'Thus says the Lord: It is not you who will build me a house to dwell in.'

⁵For I have not dwelt in a house from the day I brought up Israel to this day, but I have been going from tent to tent and from tabernacle to tabernacle.

⁶Wherever I walked among all Israel, did I speak a word with any of the judges of Israel whom I commanded to shepherd my people, saying, 'Why have you not built me a house of cedar?'

⁷And now, thus you shall say to my servant David, 'Thus says the Lord of hosts: I took you from the pasture, from following the flock, to be nagid over my people Israel.'

⁸And I have been with you in all that you went, and I have cut off all your enemies from before you; and I will make for you a name like the name of the great ones who are in the earth.

⁹And I will appoint a place for my people Israel and plant them, and they will dwell in their own place and be disturbed no more; and sons of wickedness shall no longer wear them out, as formerly.

¹⁰And from the time that I appointed judges over my people Israel, I will subdue all your enemies; and I declare to you: the Lord will build you a house.

¹¹And it shall come about that when your days are fulfilled to go with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, one who shall be from your sons, and I will establish his kingdom.

¹²He shall build me a house, and I will establish his throne forever.

¹³I will be to him as a father, and he will be to me as a son; and my steadfast love I will not remove from him, as I removed it from the one who was before you.

¹⁴And I will establish him in my house and in my kingdom forever, and his throne shall be established forever.

¹⁵According to all these words and according to all this vision, so Nathan spoke to David.

¹⁶And King David came and sat before the Lord, and said, 'Who am I, O Lord God, and what is my house, that you have brought me this far?'

¹⁷And was this too little in your eyes, O God? For you have spoken about the house of your servant for a great while to come, and have looked upon me as a man of high standing, O LORD God.

¹⁸What more can David add to you for the honor of your servant? And you know your servant.

¹⁹O Lord, for your servant's sake and according to your heart, you have done all this greatness, to make known all these great things.

²⁰O LORD, there is none like you, and there is no God besides you, according to all that we have heard with our ears.

²¹And who is like your people Israel, one nation on earth, whom God went to redeem for himself as a people, to make for himself a name through great and awesome things, by driving out nations from before your people whom you redeemed from Egypt?

²²And you have given your people Israel to be your own people forever, and you, O LORD, have become their God.

²³And now, O Lord, let the word you spoke concerning your servant and his house be confirmed forever; and do as you have spoken.

²⁴And may your name be established and magnified forever, saying, 'The LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, is God to Israel; and the house of David your servant is established before you.'

²⁵For you, O my God, have revealed to the ear of your servant that you will build him a house; therefore your servant has found courage to pray before you.

²⁶And now, O Lord, you yourself are God, and you have spoken this good thing concerning your servant.

²⁷And now, you have been pleased to bless the house of your servant, that it may stand before you forever; for you, O LORD, have blessed, and it is blessed forever.
